What Iowa Requires Before You Register
You cannot register a vehicle in Iowa without proof of liability insurance that meets the state's minimum coverage requirements: $20,000 bodily injury per person, $40,000 bodily injury per accident, and $15,000 property damage. The Iowa Department of Transportation will not issue plates or complete registration until you present acceptable proof of financial responsibility at the county treasurer's office.
The proof must show continuous coverage starting before or on the registration date. A lapsed policy, a policy that starts after the registration date, or coverage below the state minimums will be rejected. The county treasurer verifies coverage electronically in most cases, but you should carry your insurance card and policy declaration page to the appointment.

$20,000/$40,000/$15,000
These are the lowest liability limits Iowa law permits for bodily injury per person, bodily injury per accident, and property damage per accident. Coverage below these thresholds will not satisfy registration requirements.

When Your Existing Policy Covers the New Car
Most auto insurance policies automatically extend coverage to a newly-acquired vehicle for a limited grace period, typically 14 to 30 days from the purchase date. During this window, your existing policy's liability coverage applies to the new car at the same limits as your current vehicles, and the insurer will issue proof of insurance that satisfies Iowa's registration requirement.
The grace period exists to give you time to formally add the vehicle to your policy. If you register the car within that window, your existing coverage counts as proof. If you wait beyond the grace period without notifying your carrier, the new vehicle loses automatic coverage and you will not have valid proof to present at registration.
The grace period applies only when you already carry an active auto insurance policy. If you do not currently insure any vehicles, or if your policy lapsed before you bought the new car, you must purchase a new policy before registration. The automatic extension does not create coverage where none existed.
Missing the grace-period deadline leaves you without proof of insurance, and the county treasurer will reject your registration application until you add the vehicle and obtain updated proof from your carrier.
What the County Treasurer Accepts as Proof

Acceptable proof includes your insurance card (paper or digital), a policy declaration page showing the vehicle identification number and coverage effective dates, or a certificate of insurance issued by your carrier. The document must show your name as the policyholder or listed driver, the vehicle you are registering, and liability limits that meet or exceed Iowa's minimums. Generic proof that does not name the specific vehicle will be rejected.
If you just added the vehicle to your policy, allow 24 to 48 hours for the update to reach the state database. Registering immediately after adding the car can trigger a mismatch between your carrier's records and the treasurer's electronic lookup. Bring your updated insurance card and declaration page to the appointment so the treasurer can verify coverage manually if the database has not refreshed.
Adding the Vehicle to Your Policy Before Registration
Contact your insurance carrier as soon as you purchase the vehicle, even if you plan to register within the grace period. Adding the car formally ensures the VIN appears on your policy declaration page and in the state database, which prevents delays at the county treasurer's office. Most carriers process additions within one business day and issue updated proof immediately.
When you add the vehicle, your carrier will re-rate your policy based on the new car's make, model, year, and garaging location. The premium adjustment takes effect on the addition date, not the registration date. If you carry collision and comprehensive coverage on your other vehicles, the carrier will ask whether you want the same coverages on the new car. Liability coverage is mandatory; physical-damage coverage is optional unless you financed the vehicle and your lender requires it.
If you insure multiple vehicles on one policy, adding another car may increase your multi-vehicle discount or change the way the discount applies across all vehicles. The carrier re-calculates the discount when the new vehicle is added, and the total premium reflects the updated discount structure. Ask your agent or carrier representative how the addition affects your household's total cost before finalizing.

More than one in ten drivers on Iowa roads carries no insurance. Uninsured motorist coverage protects you when an at-fault driver cannot pay for damages, but Iowa does not require it for registration.

What Happens If You Register Without Insurance
Attempting to register a vehicle without proof of insurance will result in immediate rejection by the county treasurer. Iowa law prohibits registration of any vehicle that does not carry continuous liability coverage meeting the state minimums. You will leave the appointment without plates, and the vehicle cannot be legally driven on public roads until you obtain coverage and return with proof.
If you somehow complete registration without valid insurance and later get caught driving uninsured, Iowa's Motor Vehicle Division will suspend your registration and your driver's license. Driving during the suspension period adds criminal penalties and extends the suspension.
